You are not the expert in the room

1
Principle

You are not the expert in the room

  • ·Every woman there already manages money under harder constraints than you
  • ·Our job is vocabulary, tools and permission — never correction
2
Before

One week ahead

  • ·Confirm numbers, language and venue with the NGO partner
  • ·Print workbooks, play money and one guide per participant
  • ·Ask the partner what the group struggled with last time
3
Setup

The room shapes the session

  • ·Chairs in a circle or semicircle — never rows facing a lecturer
  • ·Board or chart paper at eye level
  • ·Water, and a corner where children can sit safely
4
Structure

The 90-minute shape

  • ·10 min — introductions and one money question each
  • ·20 min — concept, with a real local example
  • ·35 min — hands-on activity in pairs
  • ·15 min — questions, in participants' own words
  • ·10 min — three actions for the week, materials handed out
5
Language

Translate the idea, not the word

  • ·Say 'byaaj' before 'interest'; use rice, chai and festival budgets
  • ·Never use 'diversification', 'liquidity' or 'asset allocation'
  • ·Rupee amounts must match the room's real monthly income
6
Facilitation

Four habits that work

  • ·Ask, then wait — silence is thinking, not confusion
  • ·Write every number on the board as it is said
  • ·Let a participant explain the concept back before you move on
  • ·Never comment on how anyone currently spends money
7
Hard moments

What to do when

  • ·Someone cannot read: pair her with a partner, use symbols and coins
  • ·A husband answers for her: ask the question again, by name
  • ·You are asked for specific investment advice: give the framework, never a product
8
After

Close the loop within 48 hours

  • ·Log attendance, language, and the three most common questions
  • ·Share photos and a two-line note with the chapter lead
  • ·Flag anyone who wants help opening an account or applying to a scheme
9
Close

One workshop is a start, not a finish

  • ·Return visits are where behaviour actually changes
  • ·Aim for a second session with the same group within a month
